Alicia of Sea of Ghosts

This month we meet Alicia, the face behind the dark and whimsical fashion blog, Sea Of Ghosts.

How do you describe Sea Of Ghosts to people you meet who haven’t read it before?

It does depend on who I’m talking to, but I would generally describe the blog as an online chronicle of things that inspire my jewellery design, fashion choices and lifestyle.

When did you first start blogging and what made you first hit the keyboard?

I’ve designed my own websites since 1998 and been blogging on and off since 1999; those original incarnations were more personal, like diaries. I started Sea Of Ghosts in 2008 after I won a subscription to Vogue and realised I didn’t really have a good handle on my personal style.

What is the thing you most enjoy about blogging?

The amazing friends I’ve made and having an outlet for something that I’m really passionate about.

What is the coolest thing your blog has helped you do?

I would say getting to attend the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards in Malaysia last year has definitely been one of the most phenomenal opportunities I’ve been given.

What piece of advice would you give someone just starting out their very first blog?

Blog about what you’re passionate about; don’t blog what everyone else is posting just because it seems like the trendy topic. Content with authenticity and an original vantage point is what makes a blog truly exciting.

Tell us about your pets, friends, hobbies, star sign, shoe size… whatever!

Jewellery design and manufacture is my ultimate passion and so I’ve gone back to full time study this year to become officially qualified in Engineering Technology after 6 years of producing jewellery with only self-taught skills. I’ve spent a very long time focusing on the commercial side of jewellery design and this course is really allowing me to explore my more artistic side which I’m loving to death.

Do you have a particular favourite post that you think is Sea Of Ghosts at its best?

This post features an editorial that I really love, and although it’s not my original content I think the images speak boldly of what Sea Of Ghosts is as a fashion-based chronicle. It really speaks my style.

Recommend a blog to us! If you like Sea Of Ghosts maybe you’d like…

The Animal Orchestra: As well as being one of my best friends, Nadia is a beautiful and talented fashion journalist with an excellent eye for style. We have a ridiculous amount of identical items in our wardrobes so if you like my blog you’ll like hers even more.

What do you love about Nuffnang?

I really love that Nuffnang are dedicated to supporting bloggers, it’s all they do and they know how to do it well.

Random Mix Bag… Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialised?

You know how when the door closes the light inside the fridge goes out? Well the light inside your brain goes out too. You literally forget what’s in there the second the door closes, so you have to go back for a second and third look. True story*.

*May or may not actually be true.
