K is for KANI

This month we meet Connie, the blogger behind the gorgeous fashion blog, K is for KANI.

How do you describe K is for KANI to people you meet who haven’t read it before?

K is for Kani is a fashion blog where I take photos of outfits I wear and share them with my readers! My style would probably be described as being vintage inspired and somewhat girly so the outfits I wear tend to reflect that: I like skirts, dresses, tights and tan coloured vintage shoulder bags! I also love to mix my items with handmade accessories as well as new pieces to create a somewhat modern look.

When did you first start blogging and what made you first hit the keyboard?

I started blogging in early January last year. I had followed a few fashion blogs during high school and was interested in starting one myself, but I barely had any time on my hands! Come year 12, I was sick of biology and made what I could call a life changing decision to switch from biology to visual communication & design, something which I had not studied since year 8. My initial plan was to treat it as my ‘relaxing’ subject and have fun with it, but to my surprise having ‘fun’ and being motivated to complete folios after folios of work based on the fact that I absolutely LOVED it, really made me think. It made me realise how much I love creative things!!! And boy was that an epiphany for me. Suddenly, come VCE results time I did really well in the subject and my folio was accepted into the VCAA Seasons of Excellence exhibition at Melbourne Museum and I thought, maybe I could study this and do this one day, perhaps become a designer of some sort! I never really took my ‘hobby’ seriously or believed in myself much. Come university enrolment time, I somehow enrolled myself into Commerce/Law instead (as I do..) and well, what was I to do with my love for design, fashion and photography? I started my blog! This is where I can incorporate all the things I love – I get to design headers, banners, do html for the blog, I get to share my love for fashion, I get to edit photos and I’m rambling now..

What is the thing you most enjoy about blogging?

I think the thing I enjoy most about blogging is the fact that there are actually people out there that read my blog! Everyone always starts a blog with zero readers and so did I. At the beginning I thought, ‘well this is lonely’, posting posts that only I knew existed and only I read. But slowly, readership began to grow as people started finding my blog and I think that’s what I enjoy most. I am really ever so appreciative of those who read my blog and I really can’t thank my readers enough as they are the ones that give me motivation to keep it going, post after post.

What is the coolest thing your blog has helped you do?

My blog gave me the motivation and courage to chase my dreams. I never really thought there were so many people out there who were interested. It gave me the confidence to open my own Etsy store, which I named ‘KANI’, after my blog of course. Something which I would never have dreamed of doing if it wasn’t for my blog. So thank you!

What piece of advice would you give someone just starting out their very first blog?

I guess to be passionate and interested in what you write about, so that you can have the intrinsic motivation to update frequently – tonnes of time can go into a blog post. Also, to engage with other bloggers – visit their blogs, comment on their posts, etc. Blogging is almost like being part of a little online community, so it would be only right to join in and engage with others.

Tell us about your pets, friends, hobbies, star sign, shoe size… whatever!

Well I am an aquarius, though I have no idea what that means for me. I don’t have any pets, not sure if I want one right now but maybe in the future, perhaps a cute little king charles spaniel or some sort of small dog – I’m scared of big ones. Some of my favourite foods include coconut juice, three colour drink, sushi, salads, my mum’s cooking. I love weddings, shoes, experimenting with my camera, vintage, film cameras, sewing, corny rom-coms, The Big Bang Theory and Gossip Girl. Places I really look forward to visiting one day include France, Austria.. actually let’s just say the entire European continent, America and the UK.

Do you have a particular favourite post you think is K is for KANI at its best?

Probably this one as it shows what I think is quite typical of me – mixing handmade, vintage & new pieces together.

Recommend a blog to us! If you like K is for KANI maybe you’d like…

Okay you have to check this lovely girl out – Cuillère à absinthe. Her name is Typhanie, her blog is in French with English translations – she is one of my favourite bloggers!

What do you love about Nuffnang?

The people who run it! I’ve been in contact with a few of them and they all sound so lovely and also the fact that aside from being an advertising community, they also run networking events, blogger meetups, etc.

Lastly… when you go to a movie theatre, which armrest is yours?

Both! I like to shotgun both armrests – the half that is closest to the seat, rather than the half near the drinks holder.
