What is your blog about & how did you go about choosing the URL?
My blog is down—to—earth.blogspot.com. I chose the name when I told someone, “I don’t want anything pretentious, I just want something down to earth.” Bingo!
When did you first start blogging and what made you first hit the keyboard?
I wrote half a book and tried to sell it to an Australian publisher. No one was interested. I thought I was living an interesting, unusual life and wanted to show others that it is possible to live well on less and that happiness comes from within, not from what we buy.
What is the thing you most enjoy about blogging?
I love that “publish” button. Having been a writer earlier in my life and always having my articles edited by someone else, I love bypassing that step and pressing “publish” when it suits me. When I press it, my words are out there for anyone to see. I think that’s amazing.
What is the coolest thing your blog has helped you to do?
I tried to market my half written book, but after blogging for a year, a New York agent came calling and now I’m under contract to them to produce that. I also love that my blog has helped connect me to so many people all around the world.
What piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out their very first blog?
Decide first why you want to blog. If it’s for personal reasons – to make a record for your family, go for it, just do what you want to do and take no advice from anyone. If you want a popular blog, you have to write well, or at least have a fabulous idea that no one else has thought of. If you can provide either of those two things, then you have to blog every day, make comments on other blogs, and try to build up your audience.
Tell us about your pets, friends, hobbies, star sign, shoe size… whatever!
I live a good life with my husband in Australia. We live well on little money and we try to provide as much as possible for ourselves, including food and clothing. I don’t read magazines, watch little television and have no interest in pop culture or fashion. I use my computer to earn money writing but I find my main challenge is to walk away from the computer often so I can really experience my life and not just write about it.
What do you love about Nuffnang?
Nuffnang helps me earn money so I can continue to live the life I have chosen. I was hesitant to join the team at first but I’m glad I did. They’re a fine bunch of people with high standards.
